Book Nerd Meme and My Features

Tue Nov 3, 2009, 6:50 PM
First of all I just wanted to post here the features that I have recieved recently. I got messages on two seperate occasions from different deviants I'd never heard of telling me that they featured one of my pieces in their journals or whatnot. It was so exciting! ^__^ You can go and look at them if you want but I'm moreso just putting the links here as a memory for me ^^

:star: Feature #1 for Pooka, at this journal here: [link]

:star: Feature #2 for my Star Hanger, at this journal here: [link]

And I took the time to do this loooong meme from ~CapnFlynn :iconcapnflynn: You should do it too if you have time and love books. If you do I would love to see it. I love hearing about books ^__^

. So, you can read! Congrats!
Are you reading a book right now? How far are you into it and what do you think so far? If you're not, what was the last book you read and how did you feel about it?

I just bought Peter and the Sword of Mercy, by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson. Its the 4th in the Peter and the Starcatchers series and was a complete surprise! They left off the 3rd one saying there would be no more, and voila! Anyway, if you love Peter Pan and crave for more books themed around J.M. Barrie's wonderful creation, you should read this series! Maybe a bit juvenile, but I love children's literature ^__^

. Do you have a favorite book? Do you have... a book you really liked, at least?
Oh yes! I have to say that the Harry Potter books are my all-time favorites. I'm so completely biased towards them that nothing will ever replace those magical novels. I was entranced from the very first page 10 years ago and knew immediately that I had luckily stumbled across something fantastic. I've never been so in love with a book series in my life.

. What would you say is your favorite genre to read? What do you tend to steer away from?
Definitely fantasy! Anything that takes place in another time or world, anything with creatures that dont exist in our world, epic travels, quests, and adventures, ideas and thoughts we've never heard of before... all of those wonderful, creative, imaginative pages! I tend to steer away from romance... like the naughty-romance novels where a lot of the time story plots are re-used but with different characters and minor tweaks to change the story. Blah >.<

. Do you read more fiction or non-fiction/information books?
Mostly fiction. Although I do love learning, its hard for me to just sit and read non-fiction. I love escaping this world to jump into another where things are very much unlike where I live.
And what about informational books about ficticious subjects? lol, I have many books on subjects ranging from faeries, unicorns, and the like. Not to mention mythology books! I love them!

. How about a favorite author, or perhaps a few? J.K. Rowling of course. As well as Bruce Coville who is an expert on unicorns. He has a few books ( A Glory of Unicorns is one...) filled with short stories about the fantastic beasts as well as a series of his own called The Unicorn Chronicles . I've been reading his books since the 4th grade O_o; And I need to mention CLAMP, because I love anything they've ever put out ^^ Such talent in art and storytelling. I just wish they'd finish what they start >.<

. Have you read any terrible books? Something you'd recommend staying away from?
Animal Farm by George Orwell and Lord of the Flies . Well these books weren't terrible, in fact I'm sure they're quite good but I simply hated reading them... purely for the fact that they were disturbing and left me feeling yucky on the inside, lol! Thats really the best way to describe it.

. Do you reread books, or is once enough? Any exceptions so far?
I love revisiting books, characters, and storylines, and do so frequently. Its like watching a movie more than once. I finish a book, close it and say, "Wow, that was awesome, I cant wait to read it again!" I think reading a familiar book is just as exciting as diving into a new one. In fact, rereading a book is a form of comfort and peace for me.

. What were some of your favorite books as a child?
Oh man, anything with beautiful illustrations. I loved admiring artwork, even as a child. Fairytales and fables mostly. Short, fiction stories like, Chrystanthemum , Heckedy Peg , Mercer Mayer's Little Critter series, The Little Bug Who Went Ka-choo and Wacky Wednesday by Rosetta Stone and Theo LeSeig respectively, whom I later found out both psyeudonyms to be Dr. Seuss! I also loved The Little Matchgirl by Hans Christian Anderson, even though it always made me sad. Princess Nevermore , and the Unicorn Chronicles by Bruce Coville.

. Do you usually pick books from the kids, teen, young adult, or adult books? How old are you, if you don't mind? I'm nearly 24 and I still find myself wandering over to the young adult/children's sections most of the time! I'm captivated by children's literature. There are so many interesting stories out there to be discovered! I want to read them all...

. Do you buy books much or mostly just borrow?
I probably buy them more than I should. I love libraries and borrowing, however if I read a book I like to add it to my own collection ^^;

. Have you read any books after seeing them in movie form? Which did you enjoy more?
I try to read the books first and then see the movie. However I am a little embarrassed to say that I didnt even know The Lord of the Rings was a book series until the movies came out and I saw them ;-; lol, I dont know where I was hiding, but I had never heard of them! I also read the Inkheart series after seeing the movie. I had been wanting to read them, but didnt get around to it. The movie made me even more interested and I ended up spazzing about the whole series! lol.

. What about reading the book before there was a movie? How did you feel about the movie? Did you even bother seeing it?
Of course! I usually like to read the book first and get my own images before I see anything on screen. I always enjoy the movies and over the years have learned not to nitpick them or compare them too much to the books. I find that I'm able to enjoy them much more. I go into the theaters knowing they wont be the same and I'm okay with it. Its kind of like having the best of both worlds. And I dont care too much about changes because it is so neat to see the stories I love come to life in a different way ^__^ I dont like it when people compare them and then complain about the movies too much. Enjoy the books and the movies for what they are, separately.
Oh, and even though I like the movies of course I do much prefer reading the books!

. Do you read any other forms of literature aside from novels? Such as graphic novels, comics, (fan fiction???) etc.?
I used to read a lot of fanfiction in high school but have gotten away from that. I could still enjoy it if I find the right kind that well written, has an interesting topic and maybe a bit of angst, lol. I still also love to read manga although there again, not as much. I'm only reading Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicles, xxxHolic, One Piece, and Nana at the moment. They're quick and I love taking pleasure in the artwork as well as the stories.

. What is a book you want to read, but haven't yet? What intrigues you about it? Oh my... so many! I want to finish the Pendragon series, Brisingir , The Time Traveler's Wife (saw the movie, it was great!), finish the Chronicles of Narnia and His Dark Materials, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, umm... I have so many books at home waiting to be read! We'll just leave it at that for now ^^;

. If you could rewrite the end of one book (or any other part, I suppose), which would you choose? "If you were satisfied with every book you read's end, yay.
No... I can't think of anything. If the book is good and well-crafted then the ending is an inextricable part of it, and if the book is bad then changing the ending won't save it." I must say that I have to completely agree with ~CapnFlynn on this!

If you can think of one, name a book that made you:
:bulletyellow: cry: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Little Match Girl, Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata, Mick Harte was Here by Barbara Park, and Bridge to Terabithia by Katherin Paterson.

:bulletyellow: laugh: A Voyage to Ruin (seriously, I laughed a lot during this book! So many clever remarks!), and Everworld by K.A. Applegate... It wasnt meant to be a funny series however there are many lines throughout the series that I found hilarious.

:bulletyellow: think, in a deeper sense than the obvious: Honestly, the Bible .

:bulletyellow: feel pure happiness: Harry Potter. Nuff said XD

:bulletyellow: become so addicted you put off everything in order to finish it: Usually any book that I'm reading. Thats why I cant start a book until I'm sure I can spare the time to ignore all else, lol. But anytime I read Harry Potter, even though I've read them numerous times already, the Inkheart trilogy by Cornelia Funke, the Everworld series by K.A. Applegate, the Peter and the Starcatchers series, Pendragon by D.J. McHale (?), ooo and countless others.

:bulletyellow: die of boredom: If I'm bored, I cant get through it. Except for when I've had to like Animal Farm, The Lord of the Flies, Johnny Tremain...

:bulletyellow: learn something new: I usually learn from anything I'm reading. Oh! But I bough an Intellectual Devotional, where I can learn something new all the time! It contains quick, 1 page reads for each day in subjects ranging from art, to religion, science, to philosophy! I love it ^__^

:bulletyellow: squirm with squickiness: I avoid anything that makes me squicky, lol. Probably anything by Stephen King.

:bulletyellow: squirm with glee: Sorry to be so vague, but to sit down and lose myself in a book in general usually has me squirming with glee :D Oh by I highly reccommend Inkheart . Its a booklover's book!

:bulletyellow: very embarrassed to be reading it: Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon... or any other smut-like romance novel.

:bulletyellow: angry: Once again, probably Animal Farm and The Lord of the Flies . I guess those are my two least favorite books in the world, lol.

All right, there you have it! I love books and couldnt bare to live without reading them. Thanks for reading if you did. I know it was long, but if you love books as much as I do, you'll have enjoyed hearing what someone else has to say about them ^__^
